I am still trying to get my head around the abominable Charlie Hebdo murders that took place in Paris. George Packer of The New Yorker wrote a stunning piece on the situation, one that pretty much sums up everything succinctly and elegantly. You can read it here. "The cartoonists died for an idea. The killers are soldiers in a war against freedom of thought and speech, against tolerance, pluralism, and the right to offend—against everything decent in a democratic society. So we must all try to be Charlie, not just today but every day."

This is my view of religion: If your religion helps you get through this life, great. Just keep it to your fucking self.

Post-holiday depression is always such a thrill.

The movie No Country For Old Men is about as perfect a film as there can be. Brilliant writing, directing, and acting propel the movie to classic status. The final monologue from Tommy Lee Jones is a master class in acting. It's a simple scene with a powerful punch to the gut.

I detest cheap sentiment.

I do love having 21k+ songs on my iPod and putting it on shuffle. You can get some really odd transitions.

The latest version of Microsoft Word is completely user unfriendly. It used to be so much simpler to use.

Ice cream is still pretty damn good even when it is freezing outside.

Looking at the music I listened to last year it was definitely the year of the bedroom producer. Hardly any guitar bands made it through. Hopefully, 2015 will find a better balance.

Death is a diva.

People don't seem to get my sense of humor.

Word of advice, if you are going to talk bad about me behind my back, don't do it to my best friend.

Coachella 2015 = Borechella.

The Ultra Festival in Miami should just use the same poster every year because it is always the same lineup for the most part.

Lol.

I dislike going anywhere but directly home after work.

The new Belle & Sebastian album is exquisite.

There are many days when I wonder why I bother with some friends.

I work on a mouth-breather floor.

I read an article the other day where an early-twentysomething said that she was tired of relying on streaming sites for access to music, saying the free access to almost all music somehow cheapened the experience. She mused that if music was more challenging to get, or not as easily accessible, people like her would still seek it out. I do remember when I first heard The Cure on 120 Minutes on MTV and I couldn't wait to get my hands on everything I could, but you had to dig and search and almost give your left kidney sometimes to get music. It made the experience more rewarding. While I love having access to music at the click of a mouse, there is a bit of a let-down from it.

I don't trust people that have sunglasses on all the time.

Your cute of the day, a kitten in a top hat.

Lyrics Rattling Around My Brain

"How did I get in, I heard a rumour
From your girlfriend's sister that you knew me
And you end up dancing closer to me

I know that I broke the rule already
She asked me if I’m single, going steady
I just dropped my head and took a step off into the dark

Standing on the black and white tiles
Don’t dance on the lights 'cos the babes eat the pretty ones
We are like the islands divided

Jump to the beat of the party line
Jump to the beat of the party line
There is nobody here but you my dear
Jump to the beat of the party line."

Belle & Sebastian
"The Party Line"

"Once upon a time when
we were friends
I gave you my heart, the story ends -
No happy ever after now we're friends.
Wish upon a star if that might help,
The stars collide if you decide,
Wish upon a star if that might help.
What's it like to have loved and to lose her touch?
What's it like to have loved and to lose that much?
Well, I hope and I pray that maybe someday
You'll walk in the room with my heart.
Add and subtract but as a matter of fact
Now that you're gone I still want you back.
Remembering surrendering,
Remembering that part - all of my heart.
Spilling up in silk and coffee lace,
You hook me up a rendezvous at your place,
Your lipstick and your lipgloss seals my fate.
Sentimental powers might help you now
But skip the hearts and flowers, skip the ivory towers,
You'll be disappointed and I'll lose a friend.
No, I won't be told there's a crock of gold at the end of the
rainbow,
Or that pleasure and pain,
Sunshine and rain might make this love grow.
But I hope and I pray that maybe someday
You'll walk in the room with my heart.
Add and subtract but as a matter of fact
Now that you're gone I still want you back.
Remembering - surrendering,
The kindest struck the coolest heart - all of my heart.
Yes, I hope and I pray that maybe someday
You'll wakl in the room with my heart.
And I shrug and I say that maybe today you'll come home soon.
Surrendering - remembering,
Surrendering that heart, all of my heart - all of my heart."

Favorite Song of the 80s: ABC - "All of My Heart"

Big and bold, and bordering on the edge of cheesy without ever crossing the line, ABC's fantastic single "All of My Heart," off their brilliant debut album The Lexicon of Love, is a true master class in pop songwriting. The song is a rumination on a friendship that should have become more but never did. Martin Fry's vocals and wry delivery keep everything grounded even as the strings swirl out of control around him.

Non-Sequiturs

Love this photo.

Jean Marais was so damn beautiful

As was Guy Madison.

Bears in their underwear.

It's been one of those weeks that seems endless. I am ready for a nice weekend to get recharged. Next week will be a rather short week for me, as Tuesday Kurt and I are going to the Identity Festival to see a lot of really great bands and DJs. Will hopefully be fun.

Happy Birthday to Madonna this week. I have my iPod on shuffle and "Music" just came up. That song is so darn good.

I've been reading up on the so-called "candidates" for the Republican nomination for President. If this is the best they can do, we are in for a heap of trouble. Can't you guys find one person who is not some Christian extremist who feels the job of politicians is to get involved in the most minute aspect of everyones' lives? Whatever happened to your party's belief in less government?

Lyrics Rattling Around My Brain

"Dorothy was a waitress on the promenade
She worked the night shift
Dishwater blonde, tall and fine
She got a lot of tips
Well, earlier I'd been talkin' stuff
In a violent room
Fighting with lovers past
I needed someone with a quicker wit than mine
Dorothy was fast
Well, I ordered - "Yeah, let me get a fruit cocktail, I ain't 2 hungry"
Dorothy laughed
She said "Sounds like a real man 2 me"
Kinda cute, U wanna take a bath?
-do you wanna, do you wanna, bath-
I said "Cool, but I'm leaving my pants on" -she say-
"Cuz I'm kind of going with someone"
She said "Sounds like a real man 2 me"

Prince
"The Ballad of Dorothy Parker"

"Oh just one more
And I'll walk away
All the everything you win
Turns to nothing today
So just one more
Just one more go
Inspire in me the desire in me
To never go home"

The Cure
"Homesick"

"Well I hope and I pray
That maybe someday
You'll walk in the room with my heart
Add and subtract
But as a matter of fact
Now that you're gone I still want you back
Remembering
Surrendering
Remembering that part
All of my heart"
