Best Videos of 2010 (Nos. 10-1)

10.  Janelle Monae - Cold War

Evoking Sinead O'Connor's emotional turn in the video for "Nothing Compares to You," sensation Janelle Monae is not afraid to let the tears flow in this compelling clip.

9.  Darkstar - Gold

The skittering, haunting centerpiece to their fantastic album North, Darkstar's "Gold," a cover of the Human League B-Side, gets a beautiful, computer animated video showing the warmth beneath all the cold exterior.

8.  Olof Arnalds - Surrender

The stark scenery and imaginative choreography highlight this clip from Iceland's Olof Arnalds.  This is another video that perfectly captures the mood and feel of the song.  Quietly devastating.

7.  Under Byen - Unoder

Stunning cinematography that reminds me of the surreal work of Alejandro Jodorowsky.

6.  Interpol - Lights

Similar to Under Byen's video for "Unoder," Interpol's "Lights" invests in striking, fetishistic imagery to detail a private ritual.

5.  The xx - Islands

What seems to be the same shot over and over again, slowly reveals small changes in details, showing the disintegration of a relationship.

4.  Flying Lotus - Kill Your Co-Workers

Witty and sick animated clip for the electronic genius' song "Kill Your Co-Workers."

3.  Holy Fuck - Red Lights

Cats, cars, and carnage.  Classic!

2.  Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

Another classic video directed by Spike Jonze.  The video seems to be a typical, Smashing Pumpkins "1979" kids growing up in the suburbs clip, but there is a sly political and social commentary going on in the background, reminding me a lot of Alfonso Cauron's Y Tu Mama Tambien.

1.  The Twilight Sad - The Wrong Car

Aside from the fact that I love this song, I am not sure why I have this as my number one video other than it has the strangest emotional pull on me.  How and why does one get emotional towards an inanimate object?  Like the robot in WALL-E, it speaks to the creativity and the genius of the people behind the video.
