Top 50 Songs of 2020 (50-41)

What a year it has been.  With that said, it was, fortunately, a very good year for music leaving me with lots to ponder.  I was finally able to get my act together and pull my lists for the year.  Here are the top songs I loved this year.

50.  SALEM - "Red River"

The witch house artists return as a duo with their second album Fires In Heaven.  "Red River" seems perfectly attuned to these odd times.  It's sinister, haunting, and full of dread.  While people may wonder why SALEM is back, the better question is how they knew it was the right time to come back.

49.  Dehd - "Month"

This post-punk trio cleaned up their sound to sparkling effect on their new record.  I loved the propulsion of "Month" with its brilliant harmonies.

48. Lewis Del Mar - "Where Are You Now?"

Beautiful song that details memories of a once-close relationship that faded away.

47. William Basinski - "Oh, My Daughter. Oh, My Sorrow"

Another haunting set of decaying loops from master ambient composer William Basinski.

46. Marian Hill - "was it not"

Wistful downtempo track from the electronic duo Marian Hill.

45. Porridge Radio - "Long"

It was a great year for a new crop of post-punk acts, and Porridge Radio was one of the best.  "Long" is a tightly coiled track that builds and builds to an almost breaking point.  Hearing this band reign in the chaos is stunning.

44. girl in red - "rue"

Up and coming Norwegian singer girl in red really shows her chops on this excellent track that is a homage to the lead character of the HBO show Euphoria.

43. Molchat Doma - "Lubit' I Vypolnyat"

Tik-Tok phenoms Molchat Doma brought a cleaner sound to their new record Monument without sacrificing any of their Doomer cred.  This song could easily fit on the first Sisters of Mercy record, it's that good.

42. Dua Lipa - "Don't Start Now"

Slinky and funky disco-esque track from the wonderful pop star Dua Lipa.

41. Gorillaz ft. Peter Hook and Georgia - "Aries"

This was just a really fun collaboration featuring the sublime melodic basswork of Peter Hook.
