Jam of the Day: Burial - "Claustro"

Burial returns after a two-year absence with a killer new single called "Claustro." It's dancier than his usual material but still retains his singular sound. It debuted on Mary Anne Hobbes' radio show. To listen to it, skip ahead to the 1:10:40 mark.

Jam of the Day: Hayden Thorpe - "Human Knot"

Hayden Thorpe, the former lead singer for art-pop band Wild Beasts, has released his first solo album, the gorgeous piano-led Diviner. One of my favorite tracks is the starkly beautiful "Human Knot," which focuses on Thorpe's haunting voice.

Jam of the Day: HÆLOS - "Empty Skies"

British band HÆLOS have just released their remarkable sophomore record Any Random Kindness. It builds upon their initial trip-hop sound, making things more dense and organic. "Empty Skies" is a standout track with its drum patterns recalling Massive Attack's masterful song "Unfinished Sympathy." The band brings in their excellent use of harmonies all, of course, anchored by Lotti Benardout’s Valkyrie-like voice. It's a stunning achievement.

Jam of the Day: Big Thief - "Strange"

The brilliantly off-center pop/folk band Big Thief return with their best album yet, the grandly surreal U.F.O.F. "Strange" sounds like Joni Mitchell fronting a dream pop band. Their album is a treasure trove of riches. I keep finding something new each time.

Jam of the Day: Chasms - "Deep Love Deep Pain"

LA duo Chasms returns with their new record The Mirage. They sound like a mix of Cocteau Twins and The xx, with a dash of Public Image Ltd.'s dub soundscapes thrown in for atmosphere. "Deep Love Deep Pain" is an evocative track that is a perfect embodiment of their sound.

Jam of the Day: Rhye - "Needed"

Rhye return with this haunting, and vaguely sinister new track called "Needed." Lyrics like "Why you look so fragile? Do I seem so bad?," hint at a darker under current, as the narrator implores his lover that all he wants is to be needed. The song was co-written with Dan Wilson of Semisonic.

Jam of the Day: Ex:Re - "The Dazzler"

Elena Tonra, the leader of British rock trio Daughter, has released her first solo record under the moniker Ex:Re. It's a somber record that chronicles a recent breakup she went through. "The Dazzler" details the loneliness and emptiness that can be experienced in a hotel room. Tonra lays down a minimal musical background, but punctuates the song with lots of odd electronics, strings, and treated guitar.
