20th Anniversary: Tricky - Maxinquaye

Hard to believe Tricky's stunningly masterful debut album Maxinquaye is now twenty years old. Menacing, dark, sensual, and foreboding, it still sounds as brilliant now as it did then.

Jam of the Day: SOAK - "Sea Creatures"

Quirky and cute pop song from 18 year old Irish singer SOAK (nee Bridie Monds-Watson). Expect big things from her.

Videos of the Week

It's cold! Here are some videos to warm you up:

Taylor Swift attempts smoldering in this well shot clip.

18 year old Irish singer SOAK brings three narratives together in this somber video.

Intense performance clip from Ex-Cult.

Romare uses a split-screen narrative to provide two tributes, one to John Lennon and the other is to the spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child."

Sleek nightclub video for this disco track from Montreal trio Le Couleur.

Pompeii put forth this video which captures the feelings of being young with nothing but languid days before you.

Gorgeous track from S. Carey is paired with stunning visuals of Alaska.

Jam of the Day: The Soft Moon - "Far"

Intense, jittery track from The Soft Moon that sounds like something that could easily fit on The Cure's album Pornography.

Moody, synth-driven track from Death Cab for Cutie's upcoming record Kintsugi.

Jam of the Day: Sia - "Elastic Heart (Clams Casino Remix)"

For me, a good remix transforms a track, taking it to a different place. Sia's "Elastic Heart" in original form is an intense emotional track, with the music keeping up with Sia's tortured vocal delivery. Cloud-rap producer Clams Casino goes in the opposite direction, providing a counterpoint to Sia's strong voice, enveloping it with pillowy synths and muted percussion. You feel the struggle more acutely now. It is a stunning remix.

Florence + The Machine - "How Big How Blue How Beautiful"

Orchestral track from Florence + The Machine's upcoming new album. It is likely just a teaser of what is to come as it only features Florence's vocals in limited amount.

Jam of the Day: Shy Girls ft. Antwon - "Xhampagne"

Dan Vidmar's R&B project Shy Girls recently released a mixtape entitled 4WZ, which you can download here. I really like the track "Xhampagne" which details a late night booty call, with both parties getting what they want from the situation.

Videos of the Week

Friday! Here's your videos of the week:

Batshit crazy video from Skrillex.

Kaleidoscopic video for this collaboration between Giorgio Moroder and Kylie Minogue.

Interestingly weird collage-like video from Torn Hawk.

Starry-eyed clip from Danish band Mew.

This forlorn synthpop track from S gets a suitable low-fi video treatment.

Jam of the Day: Nite Fields - "Prescription"

Gorgeous and gothy single from Australia's Nite Fields. If you love the whole 80s 4AD aesthetic you will fall head over heels for this band.

New: Mew - "Satellites"

It's been almost 5 years since we last heard from Danish rockers Mew. From their upcoming record +- comes this swirling track.

Jam of the Day: Lower Dens - "To Die in L.A."

On their new single, Lower Dens add some synth pop sheen to their Krautrock tendencies, and the results are sleek and wonderful.
